DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, July 28th at 12:00 noon\, youth from across Atlantic Canada will be planting a red oak tree at the Thinkers Lodge in Pugwash\, Nova Scotia as a symbol of their commitment to fighting climate change and protecting the planet for the next seven generations. This public and media event culminates an intensive 3-day youth retreat\, and will be accompanied by speeches from the youth on the importance of acting on climate change\, chants\, art\, and rallying cries to action.  \nFrom July 25-28\, twenty youth Thinkers from across Atlantic Canada will be gathering for intense and brave discussions about the intersectionality of climate change with social and economic justice\, the roots of climate change in systemic oppression of marginalized communities\, incorporating art into the climate justice movement\, approaching climate justice through a lens of decolonization\, and learning from each other to build relationships and a stronger climate justice movement. \nTheir invitation – Come help us celebrate the work that we are doing\, and help us push it forward to ensure the necessary action is taken by all levels of government to protect our future! As Greta Thundberg so appropriately states “I want you to act as if the house is on fire\, because it is”. \nThis youth retreat on climate change is co-hosted by the Centre for Local Prosperity and the Thinkers Lodge. The Thinkers Lodge is a National Historic Site for the 1957 Pugwash Conference on Nuclear Proliferation. DESCRIPTION:Most rural communities in Atlantic Canada are in decline\, and programs to address these issues have been marginally effective. The Centre for Local Prosperity is working with a number of communities in Atlantic Canada to inspire community-led efforts towards ‘full spectrum sustainability’\, which works across all aspects of a community’s social fabric and economy.  This approach develops powerful intra-community networks\, where success stories in one community can be taught to another with mutual support. \nRobert Cervelli\, Executive Director\, Centre for Local Prosperity will be leading a discussion on this community-led model at the Mahone Bay Centre\, 45 School St\, Mahone Bay.  The presentation will begin about 12:45\, after a 12:00 noon luncheon.  The event is by invitation only\, and there is a $20.00 fee. DESCRIPTION:Due to the forces of globalization\, our economies today can be described as leaky buckets.  Nova Scotia has a 35% ‘leakage rate’ of dollars flowing out of the economy\, resulting in a dramatic negative trade deficit. \nRobert Cervelli\, Executive Director\, Centre for Local Prosperity will present “Re-Localizing Prosperity in Rural Atlantic Canada”.  Working alongside community groups\, businesses and governments\, the Centre for Local Prosperity encourages communities to move towards an economy scaled for their size and with local agency for their economic future.  His presentation will address the need to ‘re-localize’ rural economies\, reduce ‘economic leakage\,’ and explore initiatives for greater local procurement by major public-sector anchor institutions such as schools and hospitals. \nFree – Registration is not required.
